Google’ing is definitely becoming a bigger part of everyone’s lives. Just take this story on the Google Blog about people using the search engine to find health information.
I particularly love the first one about the woman and her father who googled (is it a common verb now?) how to deliver a baby. And did!
It seems a bit ironic that Bill Gates is saying that politics can get him down. Not that I don’t agree with that sentiment, but can this be the same Bill Gates who led Microsoft in more than a few dubious and arguably unethical practices through the years, so much so that there is even an entire Wikipedia page on the subject?
However, one should not look back as much as forward, and I do admire today’s Bill Gates. Let’s call him version 2.0. This is the philanthropic and solutions-seeking person who, along with his wife, is pursuing some noble goals to better the world.

The Geeks received an invitation to test Anonymizer, Inc.’s new consumer-based online privacy and identity protection service called Anonymizer Universal which was released in June. Anonymizer Universal creates a secure and encrypted VPN tunnel between the user and The Anonymizer Network to prevent interception of identifiable information, or “packet sniffing.” The technology protects the user by replacing their personal IP Address with an anonymous IP Address daily. One of the differentiators from other anonymizer’s that are browser-based, Anonymizer Universal works for all Internet activity including accessing the web, obtaining email, streaming music, instant messaging and playing online games.
In addition to traditional Windows and Mac Operating Systems, Anonymizer Universal also protects a user’s mobile Internet activities. For example Apple iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch devices use a “Connect/Disconnect” interface that runs silently in the background to establish and tear down the VPN session. The service only requires a simple download, and can be up and running immediately. I know that in the past few years, Google has received a lot of grief for seemingly acting contrary to their “Don’t Be Evil” motto, but you have to give credit to them when they do something that is genuinely positive, even altruistic.
Take for example, their goal to become carbon neutral and the ensuing action of agreeing to purchase power from a wind farm for the next 20 years. Of course, what this means is that this NextEra wind farm (in Ohio) will be reasonably funded for the next 20 years. If for no other reason, here’s hoping that Google is a going entity for the next 2 decades.
