Commodore back in the Game?

Commodore 64 The Geeks will visit CES in Vegas early next month so we have been bombarded with meeting requests and new product announcements. One of the more interesting product announcements is from a company called Commodore.

If you’re a geek, you know all about Commodore… yeah, the little company that launched one of the most popular and best selling computers back in 1982 called the Commodore 64. After gobbling up Amiga in 1985, Commodore then released the first multimedia computer called the Amiga 1000. The gaming world owes a debt of gratitude to Commodore’s platforms and games. So what have they done lately?

One of personal computing’s pioneers, the resurgent Commodore brand will showcase the Commodore Multimedia Tower, Commodore MediaBox and the Commodore Navigator at this year’s convention. The groundbreaking digital media company reintroduces itself on the heels of the brand’s dominant presence in the 1970s and 1980s and a European test market of handheld digital devices in 2005.

The 3.5″ TFT anti-glare screen displays directions in 3D and is easy to see and understand and the unit delivers spoken directions in 32 languages.

The TomTom seems to be a great portable GPS unit for those of us that travel quite a bit or simply do not have a GPS unit built-in to our cars.

Cell Phone Owner Tracks Down Thief Using GPS

This is just one of many such stories that are going to be occurring on a more frequent basis: a cell phone thief was quickly tracked down when the owner activated the GPS program that could pinpoint the location of the cell phone. I imagine that with the rise of RFID tags and GPS-enabled everything, that people are going to be able to tag their valuable equipment themselves and keep track of them quite easily. I can even imagine a website that charges you a monthly fee so that you can see where your ‘stuff’ is at all times. Perhaps an add-on service will be to alert you in case your items go outside of a certain range.

Tracking Your Kids with Cell Phones

Teen Arrive Alive is a GPS-based service that works with Nextel cell service and can track where those Nextel phones are, as well as how fast they are moving and in what direction. Once you’ve signed up your child’s cell phone with the service, you can login to the Teen Arrive Alive site and see where they are. You can also have that information sent to your phone.

Cellphone Signal Leads Cops To Fugitive

So this guy in Jersey stabs his cousin in the chest with a screwdriver, and initially evades capture but then eventually the police track him down by using GPS to zero in on his cell phone. What does this have to do with gizmos and technology? Everything. Obviously, if this guy really didn’t want to be captured and was aware of how thie technology worked, he would have ditched the cell phone a long time ago. While it’s very cool and amazing at the clip at which technology is advancing and ‘improving’ everyone’s lives, it is quite apparent from this story that most folks are quite content to use it without having any idea of how it all works.

Garmin Streetpilot C340 Portable GPS Navigation System, Traffic Ready

Garmin Streetpilot C340 Portable GPS Navigation System, Traffic Ready

The StreetPilot c340 provides in-car navigation that is simple for anyone to use directly out of the box. After selecting a destination from the user-friendly touch screen interface, Garmin’s text-to-speech feature tells users the name of the street, when to turn, and in what direction. If you miss your turn, the c340 automatically calculates a new route to the destination. Notification of traffic delays is a c340 option that lets drivers see congested areas via a color-coded map. This feature lets users avoid traffic by simply pushing a button that will calculate a new route. This traffic awareness is made possible via the new Garmin GTM 10 FM TMC receiver that connects to selected Garmin street navigation products. The GTM 10 receives digital data from specific FM broadcast stations in select major metro areas throughout the United States and Europe. Garmin has also added the ability for customers to augment the preloaded maps with custom POI’s from industry-standard CSV files, such as school zones and safety cameras. In addition, a proximity alert feature is included to optionally notify the driver of upcoming custom POI’s.

Garmin Forerunner 201 Wrist-Mounted GPS Personal Training Device

Garmin Forerunner 201 Wrist-Mounted GPS Personal Training Device

Combining powerful performance-tracking features with a GPS receiver, the Garmin Forerunner 201 offers runners and hikers a unique way to track their exercise regimens and goals. Unlike Timex’s BodyLink sport monitoring system, its main competitor, the Forerunner 201 integrates the GPS receiver into a single body (BodyLink has separate housings for watch and GPS).

At first, the device felt a little bulky on my wrist, both in weight and in size (it measures 3.26 by 1.71 by 0.69 inches). But it really is light enough (less than 3 ounces) so that it felt comfortable and transparent. I did, however, position the band a bit higher up my arm to ensure full mobility of my wrist, as the length of the Forerunner tended to get in its way.
