New iPhone 3G S model and OS update announced. Rolls out middle of Jun 09

Also announced at Apple’s WWDC was the latest update to the iPhone OS to 3.0 which will come out in less than 10 days on Jun 17. Oh, but that’s not as big as the new iPhone 3G S model being released 2 days later.

The iPhone 3G S 16GB will be $199 and the 32GB will be $299, while existing 8GBers will sell for $99. New in the 3G S is a digital compass, video recording, voice control and a better camera.

Engadget has some (painfully) detailed coverage of today’s keynote with screenshots, or you can see the whole presentation on Apple’s site.

Apple announces new MacBook laptops at WWDC Conf

Apple announced some new models to their laptop line today at their WWDC conference (Worldwide Developer Conference). For starters, the MacBook Air is going to become significantly more affordable – $300 to $700 more so, and MacBook’s now start at $999.

The 13″ MacBook with 2GB RAM, 160GB HD and GeForce 9400M graphics card can be had starting at $999. MacBook Pros start at $1199 and the MacBook Airs start at $1499, which represents a $300 drop from the previous entry-level Air. You can find all the new MacBooks on Apple’s site.

GfG’s Article Recap for Week Ending May 1, 2009

Let’s take another look at what we found worthy of a post this week! Let’s start with 2 recession-busting bargains that you can’t afford to miss out on: a D-Link Print Server for $20 and a nicely-spec’ed MacBook Air for $999.

Next up is the uber hi-tech Emotiv EPOC that allows you to play games and control your computer with your mind. On a similar theme we featured the very futuristic Ripple Bluetooth Headset.

In tech business news, ABC and Disney are partnering to show ABC shows on Hulu, Microsoft and Verizon are to work together on a possible iPhone Killer and Amazon are acquiring Stanza to expand their Kindle operations.

Finally, for all you Apple fans out there (everyone?), we have heard rumors of a new, cutting-edge Apple product: The iPad?

Apple working on new media pad device

Apple is working on a new device that will fall somewhere between a notebook computer and an iPhone/iPod sized device in size. Its aim – a mobile non-phone computer sans keyboard with a bigger screen than an iPod for video-watching; a media pad. Proposed name? i… Pad!

UMPCs and tablet PCs have not taken off the way that manufacturers have hoped, as laptops and smartphones continue to dominate the mobile computing market. Will Apple have better success? Given their recent successes with MacBooks, iPods and iPhones, they certainly have a good track record.

I still think that UMPCs can gain more traction if more of those vendors were willing to make the switch to Linux, as they could be made to run leaner, and thus cheaper.

Microsoft, Verizon to collaborate on an iPhone competitor

Oh Microsoft, for all of your improvements and even advancements over the years, you still manage to make me laugh and scratch my head in amazement. If you really wanted to compete with the iPhone, why didn’t you start a long time, oh say when you first knew they were coming out with the device?

You have a strange habit of coming late to the game and being annoyed that your competing product doesn’t vault immediately to the #1 position.  Your touchscreen ‘MSPhone’ could potentially outsell the iPhone (especially if Apple sticks to just AT&T for a cellular network), but it’s not about to happen any time soon. Good luck – we’ll be watching what happens.

Dell Adamo notebook – thin & lightweight

Today, Dell released the Adamo, a thin and lightweight notebook that also comes with a higher than usual amount of style, at least from the Dell ranks.

The Adamo which comes in 2 colors (Onyx and Pearl (black & white)) seems to fall into the MacBook Air category of notebooks. At 4lbs and a claimed industry thinnest 0.65″ (16.4mm) profile, there’s no question that it does.

Other notable features for the Adamo include almost a 5 hour runtime and scalloped keys (they’re concave) on the backlit full sized keyboard.

Interestingly, the Adamo, unlike most other Dell systems isn’t highly configurable. It comes in just 1 of 2 specs.

Tech spec include:

  • either a 1.2 or 1.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU
  • either 2 or 4GB 800MHz DDR3 RAM
  • 13.4 WLED display (1366 x 768)
  • the screen is edge to edge glass like the Air
  • 1.3 Megapixel webcam
  • Wireless N WiFi
  • Bluetooth 2.1
  • Dell Wireless 5530 HSPA Mini Card for AT&T in the pricier model
  • 128GB solid state drive (SSD)
  • Windows Vista Home Premium

You can purchase your Adamo right now on the Dell site, although it won’t ship for a week or so.

DJIA may kick out Citigroup and GM; add Google, Cisco?

This rumor may hold a water: The Dow Jones Industrial Average may toss out General Motors and Citigroup due to their lackluster performance and low stock prices. But who to replace them with? The second part of the speculation is that it could be Google, Cisco and/or Apple.

I’m not so sure about Apple really being Dow worthy quite yet, but the important point in this is that still more tech companies are being tapped to represent the direction of industry in the US, and in a down economy to boot.

Microsoft to produce original video content for Zunes

In what seems to be a strange move to me, Microsoft is going to produce original video content exclusively for Zune owners. The first series will be an 8-episode comedy called Cinemash starting in May. Each episode will be 3 to 5 minutes long.

Considering there are only 3 million Zunes but opver 170M iPods, why wouldn’t MS make this content available to everyone? After all, profit margins on content can be way better than on hardware, especially in a down economy. Yeah, we all know why – they want to sell more Zunes; can’t let Apple keep beating them there.

My prediction – this will fade quietly, and there will be no more MS video next year.

Logitech V470 Cordless Laser Mouse Review

Apple’s Mighty Mouse may match my keyboard and 24″ iMac in the context of design, but the Mighty Mouse simply does not match the quality of the iMac. After a year and a half, I have finally decided to drop the Mighty Mouse from my desk (literally) and switch to another mouse.

The Mighty Mouse has a design flaw, even though it was “Designed by Apple in California” where the mouse ball gets dirty. Instead of the mouse ball touching the surface of the desk, the ball rotates under your finger. When the mouse gets dirty, the best you can do is disconnect the mouse from the wireless Bluetooth link and clean in one of two ways. First you can follow Apple’s official KB article or you can turn the mouse upside down and rub really hard in all directions and hope the dirt comes out. The official way never worked for me and the second way use to work at least for a couple of weeks. I finally gave up and could no longer scroll side to side or up and down until I was sufficiently angry enough to purchase a new mouse.

In comes the Logitech V470 Cordless Laser Mouse. I decided to try this mouse because it’s a cool blue color, uses Bluetooth, ability to scroll up and down as well as sideways and uses laser technology. This is meant to be a notebook mouse, but even with my huge hands (you heard that right ladies… huge hands!) I decided to give the mouse a try. If I like the mouse enough, I’ll use it with the laptop too.

When I first got the mouse I thought the mouse was indeed blue and a bit small. Since I’ve been using it I haven’t noticed that the mouse is blue or small, just that I again have the ability to scroll horizontally and vertically! My hand fits nicely over the mouse, the buttons are easy to use and the scroll wheel works perfectly fine.

To scroll horizontally, you simply push the scroll wheel left or right until the wheel clicks. While horizontal scrolling is not as elegant as the Mighty Mouse, it works. I find that I typically use the keyboard and key shortcuts to get around the computer, except for scrolling… this fact makes the Logitech V470 Bluetooth Cordless Laser Mouse MUCH better for me to use than the Mighty Mouse. I definitely recommend the mouse for whatever computer you have provided you have Bluetooth. You’d be amazed at the clutter than disappears when you move to a cordless mouse and the accuracy you’ll gain moving from a mouse ball or optical mouse to laser technology.
