Review: Laptop Lifts – legs for your notebook/laptop

If you are one of the ever-growing number of laptop users, you will have noticed that you continually need to take your laptop off your lap to let your legs cool down or place something like a book or magazine underneath it. Well, laptops are not about to get any cooler, or be made with any kind of heat buffer, because that would just spoil the thin and light sexiness that so many of them sport now.

So what to do? Well there have been numerous ‘lap cooler’ type products for years now, but nothing that really becomes a permanent addition to your laptop (my current fav so far has been the simple Lapworks Laptop Desk). Enter Laptop Lifts, a product that falls into the “why didn’t I think of that?” category.

Laptop Lifts are basically soft and smooth rubberized half-cylinders that you adhere to the bottom of your laptop in strategic locations to lift the body of your laptop away from your lap. This has the benefit of improving airflow to/from the underside vents and fans as well as to preventing your legs from heating up or being burnt.

We tested the Laptop Lifts legs out on a 17″ Toshiba, which had something of a staircase-style underside (not flat). The Laptop Lifts legs were very easy to install – peel away the paper protecting the adhesive and stick on. We just had to go through a trial and error process to find a placement that didn’t result in the laptop rocking when on a flat surface. That means we got to test the ‘un-installation’ as well which simply involved getting a fingernail under an end and pulling the leg up from the laptop. Very easy.

The main result was instant heat relief despite the deceptively low profile of the legs. However, on a large laptop like a 17″-er, we would have liked some more legs included in the package. The # of legs included will be more than enough for smaller notebooks.

Apart from its main goal, probably the best feature (at least for some people) is that this is a semi-permanent feature. It goes wherever your laptop goes; no forgetting an accessory. The adhesive is also remarkably strong and we haven’t noticed the legs budging at all.

You can pick up a set of Laptop Lifts directly from the manufacturer for $14.99 currently, although I noticed its on sale at Amazon for $9.99.

  1. I ended up buying Laptop Smart Feet which is a similar product with a few more features like a cable organizer and the ability to take them on and off at any time.
