IBM’s Design Lab Peers Into The Future, Surfaces With Gadgets

By David Ho

Beneath a glass pyramid rising abruptly from quiet woods, IBM is thinking about the future. It is a new kind of vision for a company known for its mammoth mainframe computers and business software. Here at Big Blue’s Corporate Design Center, also known as the “gadget lab, there are prototypes galore. A speech-recognition headset that reads lips. An audio and video mixing studio the size of a handheld video game. A wireless handheld device for stock traders. Some are working devices while others are only steps beyond the imagination, but IBM engineers think their gadgets could change the way people work and play. The effort is part of the company’s larger strategic shift toward the consulting and services business.

Annual cell phone sales to reach 1 billion by 2009

By Elle Cayabyab

Wow. A study of consumers in 12 countries predicts that sales of cell phones will exceed 1 billion handsets each year in 2009, becoming the most common consumer electronics device in the world. An estimated 2.6 billion people will own one by then, according to the Gartner Group, who conducted the study, and handset manufacturers will reap the profits, with vendors such as Nokia and Samsung generating combined revenues of US$1.7 billion in 2009. The Asia Pacific region is seen as becoming even more important, with one out of every three mobile phones sold in the area in 2009, up from one in four this year. The growth in cell phone sales can be attributed to developing nations eschewing traditional land-line telephone service in favor of cell networks, which are much cheaper to implement.

TV-B-Gone

TV-B-Gone

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are about 250 million television sets in the U.S. and we can guess that the majority of them are turned on a lot of the time. All in all, this is not bad (heck, we enjoy a good movie as much as anyone else) but there are some occasions when you just need to do everyone a favor and turn the TV off. A certain portion of television content is just plain questionable and about as healthy as second-hand smoke.

World Future Society Conference to be held in Chicago

By Jon Van

Many people talk about “thinking outside the box,” but the folks at the World Future Society actually live there. Their futuristic thinking will come to Chicago, by the truckload, in less than two weeks as the society brings its annual seminar, WorldFuture 2005, to the Hilton Chicago on July 29. The meeting, which bills itself as “the world’s fair of ideas,” will feature academics, consultants, lawyers, policymakers and researchers discussing technology’s social implications. One course that runs for two days–“How to Think Like a Futurist”–is an intensive introduction to studying the future that promises to supply useful techniques “including trend identification and extrapolation” and various methods used to create informed speculation.

Brits Pay More for Hi-Tech Gadgets than Americans

UK Consumers could be paying almost double what they need to for their hi-tech toys, an investigation has found. The research, carried out by reporters at PC Pro magazine, found that a basket of gadgets and software cost £3,500 from UK shops, but was £1,000 less when bought directly from US websites. The saving varies by gadget but in many cases PC Pro found that US prices were half those in the UK. Software, laptops and portable music players were all cheaper overseas.
