Traffic Tickets Go High-Tech In Broward

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. — The Broward Sheriff’s Office has a new gadget they hope will help them catch more speeders. Deputies are using electronic devices known as PCs — Pocket Citations — to issue traffic tickets quicker and more efficiently. The Pocket Citation can scan the magnetic strip on a driver’s license and electronically enter the driver’s name, address, and other information on the citation. The deputy then finishes the citation by choosing the appropriate vehicle information and traffic violation from drop-down menus on the PC. When all the necessary information has been loaded into the PC, the deputy can print out the citation via a wireless connection to a small, rechargeable printer. The PC captures the drivers’ names, addresses, types of citations, and when the shift is over, the deputy can download that information into a database file.
