16 Apps We Can’t Wait To See On The Kindle 3

Now, don’t take this like I don’t think the Kindle is a slick and slightly sick piece of technology… because I do. But still, there’s room for improvement. Seeing that Dali himself would seem as creative as arithmetic in comparison to me (if I do say so myself), I figured I’d sit down and create a list of Kindle apps that would undoubtedly rock… if they existed. Observe:

1. Star Trek App

Picture this: you pull out your Kindle, flick it on and you’re greeted by a readout that looks just like a Star Trek style maintenance log. This app would let you go where no man has gone before… or at least not that many. Throwing up Spock’s “Vulcan salute” as you read is optional.

Do We Treat Computers Like People? Research Says Yes

The Man Who Lied to his LaptopAs it turns out, we have much deeper ‘relationships’ with our computers and other gadgets (think cars) than we think we do. Stanford professor, Clifford Nass, has done the research and even written a book (The Man Who Lied to His Laptop: What Machines Teach Us About Human Relationships) on the subject.

We treat computers and other devices like people: we empathize with them, argue with them, and form bonds with them. We even lie to them to protect their feelings.

From an article he wrote in the WSJ:

After being tutored by a computer, half of the participants were asked about the computer’s performance by the computer itself and the other half were asked by an identical computer across the room. Remarkably, the participants gave significantly more positive responses to the computer that asked about itself than they did to the computer across the room. These weren’t overly sensitive people: They were graduate students in computer science and electrical engineering, all of whom insisted that they would never be polite to a computer.

The History of Video Games … in Print

Book: The History of Video GamesWe recently received a tip for a forthcoming 2-volume set of books entitled “The History of Nintendo” which is being translated from French to English. But it led us to discover that there are more than a few books written on not just Nintendo specifically but the video gaming industry in general.

Wikipedia has a list, and there’s at least one good Listmania list on Amazon or you could do a search for “history of video games“.

Or if you would just like to read stuff online, check out DMOZ’s huge collection of links on the subject.

Latest version of Amazon’s 6″ Kindle starts at just $139

Amazon.com Kindle 6" eReaderAmazon.com has a new version of the 6″ Kindle coming out soon. The new Kindle DX was released just 3 weeks ago. The price is new too – even lower, $139 for the WiFi-only model and $189 for the 3G+Wi-Fi model. Wow. Wonder when the B&N nook will get a price cut?

This model has a new E-ink display like in the Kindle DX, is lighter (8.5oz), has 2x the memory (4GB), voice navigation (say “next page”), and 21% smaller.

This latest Kindle ships in less than a month on Aug 27th.

How to Convert Cassette Tapes to MP3s for Free on a Mac

My wife recently was deep cleaning and ran across a few tape cassettes that she remembered she really liked and asked if I could convert or digitize the tapes to MP3s for use in iTunes and on her iPhone. I figured it wasn’t a big deal so I told her I could before I thought through the process (that’s fairly typical for me). In any case, converting tapes to MP3s using a Mac ended up being simple enough. After the jump, you can read my step-by-step how-to on converting cassette tapes to MP3 on a Mac.

Amazon’s newest Kindle DX is more than $100 cheaper

2010 Kindle DXAmazon.com has a new version of the Kindle DX. It’s the bigger brother of the regular Kindle.  The most obvious difference is that the Kindle DX has a 9.7″ E-ink screen while the Kindle has a 6″ display.

So what’s new in the new DX? Here’s the rundown:

  • 50% better contrast
  • can be read in direct sunlight
  • now in charcoal graphite color
  • free 3G wireless, globally too
  • battery life is now rated at 1 week with wireless on
  • And the biggest change has to be that they dropped the price to $379 (from $489)

Wow, just realized that there are now over 600,000 books in the Kindle Store. Remember when it was still at 170k? Hmm… maybe B&N needs to make a nook DX?!

Ships today (July 7 2010).

The screenshots alone are amazing as there are 3 stompboxes (effects), 1 amp+cabinet and 2 mics in the free version of AmpliTube. There is also an LE version ($2.99) and a Full version ($19.99) which comes with 11 stompboxes, 5 amps+cabinets and 2 mics.

Hackers by Steven Levy - book cover

Book Review: Hackers: Heroes of the Computer Revolution by Steven Levy

Hackers by Steven Levy - book coverSteven Levy’s seminal historical and story-told book, Hackers: Heroes of the Computer Revolution, has just received a 25th anniversary birthday present – a facelift and updates that include Facebook’s Mark Zukerberg, Bill Gates, Richard Stallman and the Woz, Steve Wozniak and a new publisher in O’Reilly Media.

If you consider yourself a computer geek, hacker, enthusiast, a wanna-be or just interested, then you absolutely need to read Hackers. It tells the story of how the original set of ‘hackers’ started off in various places such as MIT’s basements, garages, and bedrooms and evolved (sometimes) into companies, big and small that changed the way the world looked at and interacted with computers.
