The award-winning Philips ‘EcoTV’ is a 42″ stunner. This 1080p full HDTV set features a dimmable backlight and power saver mode that can push the power consumption of this set down to 75 watts, which is just a little more than a standard incandescent light bulb. It also has a standby mode that sips just .15 watts.

Sci-Fi fans say Firefly is best TV show, Blade Runner best film

A survey held by the Sci-Fi channel and booksfree.com asked fans what are the best books, tv shows, movies and things to save the world are, and tops of the list were 1984 by Orwell, Josh Whedon’s Firefly, Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, and reading as the top way to save the world.

I can’t say that I understand the #1 pick for saving the world, but the others are fair winners. I’m happy to see some of my fav tv shows make the list: Stargate: SG-1, The X-Files and Babylon 5. Interestingly, Star Wars did not make the movie list.

You can take a look at the entire list over at Wired.com.

Samsung shows off a 82″ OLED TV with Backlight

At CES this year, Sony showed off their 1st OLED (Organic LED) TV that will go on sale, except it was a puny 11″ screen. It was a sweet looking TV though at 3mm thick and with a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1. But who wants 11″ of OLED when they can get 50″ of Plasma for the same price?

Now Samsung just showed off an 82″ OLED with backlighting. We may even start seeing some more reasonably sized screens coming to stores soon as well. Essentially, it’s not a question of technology but of economics – scale and cost.
