Emergency USB Charger – for phone, MP3 player, etc.

Emergency Charger for iPhone, iPod, Mobile Phone, etcHere’s another emergency USB charger, this one powered by 2 AA batteries. Not a bad deal for under $10, and it includes a tiny built-in LED light for grins.

However, I can’t say I love the idea of using batteries. I’d rather have it either use a rechargeable battery or even better, be solar rechargeable (like the iTech SolarCharger).

How to Convert Cassette Tapes to MP3s for Free on a Mac

My wife recently was deep cleaning and ran across a few tape cassettes that she remembered she really liked and asked if I could convert or digitize the tapes to MP3s for use in iTunes and on her iPhone. I figured it wasn’t a big deal so I told her I could before I thought through the process (that’s fairly typical for me). In any case, converting tapes to MP3s using a Mac ended up being simple enough. After the jump, you can read my step-by-step how-to on converting cassette tapes to MP3 on a Mac.

12 Gizmos for Christmas: #6 MP3 Player

MP3 players are again among the Geek’s top 12 Gadgets of Christmas and Apple’s iPod continues to outsell and rule this market. If you’re looking for our list to include Zune, SanDisk, Archos or Creative… you’ll be disappointed because they simply do not make the best seller list.

The bestselling iPod is the Apple iPod touch 3rd Generation ($179.99 for the 8GB to $359.99 for the 64GB) that comes installed with the iPhone OS 3.1 software and a 3.5″ widescreen Multi-Touch display.

Apple iPod nano 5th Generation with 8GB with a smaller profile 2.2″ color TFT display.

Finally, the Apple iPod classic 7th Generation with 160GB is a great choice for someone who loves to carry all their music with them (roughly 40k songs) but they don’t care about grabbing apps from the iTunes store. Also, this is a hard drive based iPod so don’t exercise or run with this one!

Finis 3.1Gb waterproof MP3 player

Here’s another water-related product from FINIS, a 3.1Gb MP3 player that can be submerged in water, so you can use it for swimming. The SwiMP3 player works like the Audio Bone Headphones and transmits the sound to your cheekbones by vibration. Sound strange, but it works surprisingly well.

The SwiMP3 plays MP3 and WMA files and has basic controls embedded in one of the sides.

Speedo Aquabeat – Waterproof MP3 Player

Speedo Aquabeat

I do enjoy a good relaxing trip on my $multi-million yacht, listening to my music whilst basking in the glorious sunshine, that is until my iPod gets wet and dies on me… Yeah right. But the point is, it could happen and Speedo have engineered solution to this (or, most likely, a gizmo so people can listen to music whilst swimming) – a waterproof 2GB MP3 player that doesn’t actually look ugly! 2 GB of storage should keep you entertained for long enough with about 500 songs on it and has a nice subtle look to it, where most other waterproof devices can have very tacky color schemes and patterns.

The AquaBeat easily attaches to any swimwear items, and will float to the top of the water if dropped and comes in shades of green, pink or black. You also get all the usual usability as you would get with any other standard MP3 player.

Bluetooth MP3 Sunglasses

Bluetooth MP3 Player

Last month we featured a pair of Bluetooth Sunglasses but this new device combines both a MP3 player and Bluetooth connectivity, and for around than half the price of the other pair for the top memory.

Built-in memory ranges from 128MB to 2GB, depending on how much music you want to listen to in your glasses, and battery life is 6 hours after a full charge. Like many in-car Handsfree kits, if you’re listening to the MP3 player and you get a call coming in then the MP3 will shut off and switch to your call. It plugs into your computer via USB and is compatible with the basic audio file formats; MP3/WAV/WMA. Price is a bit uncertain – but if you order in bulk you could get down to about $22 for the 2GB model.

Our thoughts? This product is quite a bit more bulky on the sides than the other pair we featured, and probably isn’t the same quality, but is a lot cheaper. It’s a toss up between MP3 and quality/style, but we recommend you go for the other pair.

Holiday Gift Ideas 2008: MP3 Players

More gift ideas for the music fan, but honestly, who doesn’t want an MP3 player today? The vendor choices haven’t changed much since last year: Apple, Microsoft, Sandisk, Creative, Cown and Sony. There are 2 main choices in MP3 players – whether or not it has a Flash drive or a hard drive. The Flash drive based ones are a lot smaller and lighter. Here are but a few good samples.

Apple iPod Touch (2nd gen, 32GB: $370, 16GB: $280)
Apple iPod Nano (4th gen, 16GB: $200)
Sony Walkman (8GB: $92)
Creative Zen (16GB: $153)
Microsoft Zune (Video 120GB: $225)
Cowon PMP (16GB: $177)
Sandisk Sansa View (32GB video: $210)

Cassette MP3 Player

This is a wacky little gadget. As a standalone device, it’s actually an MP3 player. It has a headphone jack and plays MP3s off of the external SD or MMC memory card (unfortunately you have to supply your own) that you slot into the bottom of it. The other crazy use is that it functions like a regular cassette – just stick it into your home or car’s tape player and away you go.

This is a great little piece of functional retro-art that might date you a little or just make you look cool/weird. 😉

Its built-in battery is charged up via USB and it’s compatible with Win2000/XP.

iRiver clix (Gen2) MP3 Multimedia Player

clix gen2

iRiver has redesigned their clix player, and this slick multimedia player plays music, video, photos and has a built-in digital FM tuner and voice recorder. The clix comes in 3 sizes: 2GB, 4GB and 8GB. The clix claims up to 24 hours of battery life, which is pretty amazing if it works out, but I’m betting that at my volume levels, it’s less. The 2.2″ screen looks pretty sweet and the whole package is very sexy.

The clix handles MP3, WMA and even OGG in the audio department, and WMV and MPEG4 for video. The clix has a non-iPod way of navigating, with the controls on the sides of the player instead of on the face. This 2nd generation of the clix is thinner and definitely better looking than its predecessor, but you be the judge of that second point.
