Crackberry Owners willing to trade for iPhone

| Posted Mar 19th, 2010 by Chief Gizmateer [e-mail, website]

An interesting article by Arstechnica state that 40% of Blackberry users are willing to trade in for an iPhone. Does this mean Obama’s BlackBerry endorsements are wearing off?

The more likely scenario is that RIM is unable to keep up with features consumers want more of that are incorporated in the iPhone and Android. To muddy the waters even more, Windows Mobile 7 has been rebuilt from the ground up and will become more of a threat in 2010 to BlackBerry business. In fact, I know several gigantic enterprises that have switched from RIM to Microsoft’s Mobile devices porting apps and removing all traces of RIM from the environment.

It seems current iPhone and Android users are happy with their device as 90 percent plan to stick with their current platform for their next upgrade.

LG eXpo GW820 smartphone can turn into a projector

| Posted Mar 17th, 2010 by Chief Gadgeteer [e-mail, website]

LG expo cellWe don’t feature a lot of cell phones on GfG because there are entirely too many models and there are other sites that are dedicated to just that. But of course we feature the ‘big name’ ones and the newsworthy and unique.

The LG eXpo GW820 definitely fits the newsworthy category, as it’s the first handset to feature (an optional) snap-on pico projector. Yes, a projector, like the expensive ones you have in the office to show off those mind-numbing PowerPoint presentations on how badly your company is doing.

The (did we mention optional) projector weighs only 1.8 ounces and is small enough to fit into the palm of your hand, and can project an image up to 40″ in size. Not bad. However, it does kill the phone’s battery pretty quickly, so you’ll probably end up using the conventional office projector for long presentations/demos.

The phone itself is a slider with a full QWERTY keyboard, a 3.2″ touchscreen, 3G connectivity on AT&T, a 5MP camera, 802.11b/g WiFi, microSD card slot and runs Windows Mobile.

Price: $99.99 with contract on AT&T. $179 for pico projector

Pong case for iPhone reduces radiation to your head

| Posted Mar 13th, 2010 by Chief Gadgeteer [e-mail, website]

pong case reduces radiationCell phone radiation – myth or real? Yes, it’s definitely real and you should wear a headset to reduce the level of radiation that you’re exposed to. But if you’re one of the resistant types that just loves holding your phone to your head, then Pong Research has an answer for you – the Pong Case.

The claim is that it reduces the amount of radiation that hits your head. A bunch of independent tests show that it really does reduce it. Not to zero, but 65% in some cases.

Unfortunately, radiation abatement isn’t cheap or ubiquitous since it’s only available for the iPhone 3G/3GS. We can still dream of a day when cell phone makers just build the darn radiation protection into the units or give you an electric shock if you hold it too long. ;-)

nio Bluetooth security system prevents your phone from ‘walking away’

| Posted Mar 10th, 2010 by Chief Gadgeteer [e-mail, website]

UK company, TenBu, has a solution for alerting you if your prized possessions go ‘wandering’ off – the nio Bluetooth security system.

nio is a small fob (or tag) that you tie via Bluetooth to your phone. So if your phone and nio end up being apart at some predetermined distance, a loud audible alarm will go off on the nio tag.

The distance threshold depends on the security setting – low, medium or high. The higher the security, the lower the distance. 25m is the maximum range.

nio currently operates on most Blackberry, Nokia, Sony Ericsson and other popular mobile handsets, including Windows Mobile devices. A full list of compatible devices can be found at http://bluenio.com/compatibility. Android and Palm support should show up later this year.

The accompanying software that runs on your phone can manage up to 5 nio tags, so you can buy additional tags and place them in spots like your briefcase, handbag, etc. Here’s a video explaining how the nio system works:

The nio tags are a bit pricey, but hopefully, other competitors will spring up to drive down the cost on such a necessary service.

Bheestie bag dries out your wet electronics

| Posted Feb 25th, 2010 by Chief Gadgeteer [e-mail, website]

bheestie dry out bagDrop your cell phone in a pool, got water splashed on it, or worse yet, did it fall in the toilet?! Well here is some inexpensive help without having to buy a new phone – the Bheestie electronic dry out bag.

Bheestie, which means ’servant who draws and carries water’ is simple bag that contains beads that are super moisture absorbers. Once your phone or other piece of electronics gets wet, place it in the bag for 24-72 hours (depending on how wet it got).

The Bheestie bag will last about a year, depending on how heavily you use it. If you are prone to moist accidents, then you should snag a Bheestie bag right away, because you’ve got to start drying our your equipment immediately after it gets wet. If it sits for a while, the damage may be irreversible.
