Holiday Gift Ideas: Dell’s tech ideas sorted by price ranges

In case you didn’t know, Dell sells way more than just their computers, primarily electronics, gadgets, and computer accessories, but as you well know, that’s a ton of stuff! Anyway, they’ve done a nice job of putting together a nice collection of gadgets sorted by price.

There are 3 price ranges: under $100, under $200, under $300 and everything else above that which they are cheekily calling “Ultimate gifts”. Products include everything from USB Flash drives, cameras, monitors, printers, MP3 players, laptops, GPS all the way to high-end big screen TVs.

Samsung offering a recycling program in the US

Thank you Samsung for deciding to launch a recycling program in the 50 states. With the exception of appliances, you can drop off any Samsung consumer electronics at various drop-off points. Here is the Samsung Recycling Direct website.

Openmoko launches Neo, Open Source Linux Mobile Phone

If you’re in the market for a smartphone that you can extend with potentially unlimited applications, are intrigued by the iPhone, really want an Android phone, but can’t wait, then take a look at the Neo FreeRunner which hits the (virtual e-commerce) street this weekend.

The Neo is arguably the first open mobile computing platform that is based on Linux. The 6.5oz phone itself boasts GSM (805/900MHz) network connectivity, a 480×640 VGA touchscreen, 802.11b/g WiFi, GPRS 2.5, Bluetooth 2.0, 128MB RAM and 256MB Flash, along with a microSD slot.

Openmoko expects to launch a full suite of applications next month that will go along with the dialing & SMS capabilities that the phone will initially ship with.

Eye-Fi Explore – Automatically geo-tags your photos

We featured the Eye-Fi SD card that bundles WiFi connectivity onboard. Stick this in your digital camera and then you can automatically upload your photos to your favorite photo sharing website.

Now Eye-Fi is rolling out a new version of its product dubbed the Eye-Fi Explore that goes one step further – it automatically geo-tag your photos by using nearby WiFi access points to triangulate your position. Eye-Fi partnered with Skyhook Wireless to provide the geo-data.

We saw a geo-tagging gadget called the GPS Photo Finder back at CES, but I’ve got to say this wins out, because you don’t have to take your SD card and stick it into a different device.

GPS sales to tank?

“Tank” may be a strong word, but Om Malik points out that SiRF Technology, which is a maker of GPS chips, is letting go some of its workforce and he feels that SiRF is a bellwether of the GPS industry. As he puts it, SiRF is the “canary in the GPS coal mine” and the GPS end-device makers may follow. For years now, GPS has been the single best-selling electronics category.

I agree with Malik who makes the point that GPS-only devices will go by the wayside as GPS functionality is integrated into other devices, particularly cell phones. I hope that Dash is looking to the future as they have an interesting and potentially very useful product.
