JOOS Orange Solar Charger Burns the Competition

JOOS OrangeWhen I first got a solar charger for my Nokia N95 all those years ago now it seemed that it simply couldn’t sustain the phone’s energy consumption for any decent period of time, but the new JOOS (pronounced ‘juice’) Orange solar charger is planning to change that.

The manufacturers of the device are claiming that it can provide 20 times more power (offering up to 2.5 hours of talk time for every hour charging) than competing solar panels making it a very attractive option for some of the power-hungry devices it can charge.

These devices include the standard smartphones, MP3 players, tablets, handheld games consoles and so on, but interestingly it also claims to be able to power small medical refrigerators, water purification systems and lights. It seems clear that JOOS Orange is hoping to be considered for power in third world countries.

The device is highly durable and can be used pretty much anywhere including in sandy environments or underwater. The device is will be hitting the market at a recommended price of $99.95 and will be available from SolarJOOS.com. The initial expected release date was June 2010 but this has been pushed back. Adapters to charge your devices have to be bought separately but they are all very fairly priced; around $4 per adapter.
