Uh-oh – Even Microsoft’s Windows 7 launch has bugs in it

| Posted Oct 31st, 2009 by Chief Gadgeteer [e-mail, website]

Oh Microsoft. It’s really not a good sign that your launch celebration of Windows 7 with cascading dominoes had ‘bugs’ in it!

(If you don’t feel like watching the whole way through, I’ll give away the ‘bugs’ – there were sections where the dominoes didn’t fall and in one case, someone had to manually push them to finish the sequence.)

Mozilla Labs’ Raindrop project aims to cut through e-mail clutter

| Posted Oct 31st, 2009 by Chief Gadgeteer [e-mail, website]

Mozilla-RaindropDo you get too much e-mail, whose volume has grown significantly in recent times due to social networking notifications from the likes of Facebook & Twitter?

How do you sort it out and quickly? Filters? Folders? Those methods may be doing the trick right now, but Mozilla Labs is working on a different approach – creating views of your messages (not necessarily e-mail only) and letting you interact with those conversations without having to switch applications.

Speedo Aquabeat – Waterproof MP3 Player

Speedo Aquabeat

I do enjoy a good relaxing trip on my $multi-million yacht, listening to my music whilst basking in the glorious sunshine, that is until my iPod gets wet and dies on me… Yeah right. But the point is, it could happen and Speedo have engineered solution to this (or, most likely, a gizmo so people can listen to music whilst swimming) – a waterproof 2GB MP3 player that doesn’t actually look ugly! 2 GB of storage should keep you entertained for long enough with about 500 songs on it and has a nice subtle look to it, where most other waterproof devices can have very tacky color schemes and patterns.

The AquaBeat easily attaches to any swimwear items, and will float to the top of the water if dropped and comes in shades of green, pink or black. You also get all the usual usability as you would get with any other standard MP3 player.

Nexcopy Uses Movie Trailer Theme for USB Duplicator Product Announcement

| Posted Oct 27th, 2009 by gmo [e-mail, website]

If Nexcopy where to make a movie about USB duplicators and data loading USB thumb drives, this would be the movie trailer to draw your attention.

We must admit the unique idea of taking an angle like this to introduce a new product [one which is kind-of mundane] is interesting to say the least. The 1 minute video gives you just enough information to peak your interest, yet doesn’t bore you enough to click away.

The high definition version is posted on youtube, but you’ll get the point from this:

We’ve mentioned Nexcopy before with their flag ship 20 port system, but if the video got you motivated to do some serious USB data loading, click to learn more about the Nexcopy USB duplicator and SD duplicator solutions.

Yahoo shuttering GeoCities today. RIP GeoCities

| Posted Oct 26th, 2009 by Chief Gadgeteer [e-mail, website]

In another step towards the future, a page on the past is closed: GeoCities is being shuttered today by Yahoo, which purchased the free website host in 1999.

GeoCities circa 1996:

In a move that puts more emphasis on the bottom line, Yahoo is nudging new customers to its paid hosting service.

Of course, there’s another giant that still has a free, although not as well-known, hosting service: Google.

RIP GeoCities.

AMD working on 6-core CPU chips for home machines

| Posted Oct 25th, 2009 by Chief Gadgeteer [e-mail, website]

Sure, we’ve all grown used to have dual-core CPUs in our home machines, and there are lots of quad-core machines in offices, but how about 6 and 8 cores?! Well, thanks to AMD, we may soon see 6-core chips geared for home use. Codenamed Thuban, it’ll probably be called Phenom II X6 when it comes out, probably next year.
