The ‘anti-Twitter’: Woofer!

| Posted Aug 31st, 2009 by Chief Gadgeteer [e-mail, website]

LOL. Too funny. 2 guys from DC decided to create the “anti-Twitter” appropriately titled Woofer. What does that mean exactly? Woofer doesn’t have a maximum length like Twitter; instead it has a minimum length (1400 characters to be exact)!

It’s actually an homage to Twitter. Not sure this will actually have Twitter-like traction, especially as 1400 characters is really getting up into blog entry length.

The bit I find most interesting is that you can tweet your woofs!  Too bad they didn’t get the domain woofer.com.

PS> I can’t woof this post; it’s not long enough!

VHS2DVD Wizard – Converts VHS to DVD

| Posted Aug 31st, 2009 by will [e-mail, website]

VHS2DVD Wizard

VHS2DVD Wizard is another competitor in the VHS to DVD conversion market. It presents a simple and tidy way to transfer your VHS video tapes to DVDs. Sure it might not have the same features as some of the other competitors (round up) but it does it cheaper and perhaps with less hassle.

Plug in the 2 video cables to connect your PC via USB to your VHS player, install the software and simply hit play on your VCR. The software will capture it as it is playing and allow you to edit unwanted sections out at the end (such as ads) before finally burning it to DVD, or simply saving it on your computer for future viewings. The price ($50) is very similar to that of Honestech’s VHS to DVD Deluxe (which we’ve tested and reviewed in depth), but keep in mind that the Honestech product doesn’t care whether its VCR or any other analog source (audio and/or video) as long as it has RCA output jacks.

Sennheiser’s Totally Wireless Earphones

Sennheiser MX W1 Earphones

Sennheiser have broken into the ultra premium headphone market by offering their Sennheiser MX W1 Earphones, which are completely wireless and compatible with any device with a 3.5mm jack. The included transmitter plugs into the jack to transmit your music (or book, as Amazon say these get bought alot with Kindles) into your headphones wirelessly. The earphones consist of a unique ‘twist’ system to make sure they stay in your ears whilst on the go – you wouldn’t want to lose a pair of $400 headphones, would you?

The earphones are rechargeable, presumably by some sort of dock, and the innovative carry-case they come with allows you to have up to 3 full charges whilst you’re on the go, so you need never be without your music. Finally, for those of you really into your earphones, they feature neodymium magnets for the best sound around.

Google Books now supports EPUB format

| Posted Aug 29th, 2009 by Chief Gadgeteer [e-mail, website]

Now we’re moving along. Google is doing their part to get the industry on board with EPUB, an electronic format for books. That means that all of those public domain books hosted on Google Books are now downloadable in that format on any device that supports it. That includes Sony’s line of eReaders.

C’mon Amazon – get your Kindle up to speed already.

Calibrate your HD TV with this free tool

| Posted Aug 29th, 2009 by Chief Gizmateer [e-mail, website]

You may not know it, but there’s a good chance your high-def TV is not calibrated properly. Essentially, yellow should look like yellow on every TV, but it usually doesn’t because either you or the factory or the store tweaked the TV.

What you should do is get a calibration DVD that walks you through what you need to adjust. Normally, those cost somewhere in the $20-$50. Or you could get a Best Buy-type store to do it for you. Even more $. Move over $-solution; don’t you know we’re in a recession?! XYHD.TV has a free solution. Just head over here and download the tool.

USB Wireless Computer Control

USB Compute Remote Control

This nifty innovation takes the TV remote to the next level by turning it into a computer remote. All you need to do is plug the USB receiver into your computer and away you go. The remote features buttons for all the major computer functions, such as page up/down, tab, mouse, typing controls (in a mobile phone keyboard layout) and even a mouse to help you hunt around your screen.

There are also a number of hotkeys on the top of the remote that can be programmed to start the application of your choice. Unfortunately style was not one of the inventor’s strong points!

Split Stick – 2 Flash Drives In One

| Posted Aug 28th, 2009 by will [e-mail, website]

USB Split Stick

Some ‘crazy’ people over at quirky.com have designed a flash drive they named the Split Stick. This is a 2GB, double-ended flash drive that allows you to switch between 2 different memory units by sliding a button along, separating your work from leisure or whatever else it may be that you choose to keep separate.

The units are available in a variety of colors and can be etched with a symbol on each side of the stick to help remember which section is which – you don’t want to be opening up your holiday snaps at work! The price is also very attractive for such a unique product at $24.99 but it is still in the development stage.

This product just leaves me with one question – wouldn’t it have been a lot easier and cost effective to simply partition a 4GB drive?

Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard) available Fri

| Posted Aug 27th, 2009 by Chief Gadgeteer [e-mail, website]

Apple’s latest revision of the Mac OS operating system, version 10.6 (codenamed “Snow Leopard”) drops tomorrow (Fri) for an upgrade price of $29. Yes, $29. Why? Because Snow Leopard is meant to be more of a performance and efficiency improvement, not a version replete with new features.

Not only is the memory footprint smaller, but the disk space taken up by the core OS is smaller (by ~7GBs). However, this version drops support for the PowerPC architecture and now only supports the Intel CPUs that power today’s line of Macs.

The improvements and bug fixes, not to mention the price, so far have been hailed positively.

Sports items with built in cameras are nothing new, but they can still be highly impressive and innovative, especially when inside an underwater sports item such as a scuba mask. This is where Liquid Image come in – they supply 4 masks with built in cameras set into the top of them to record your underwater voyages. The masks themselves provide all the functionality you would need out of a scuba mask, whilst recording your images with a camera quality that ranges from 3.1megapixels right up to 720p HD recording.
