It’s like Amazon for Mad Scientists

| Posted Mar 31st, 2008 by Mr. Alex [e-mail, website]

Magnetic FerrofluidI know what you’re all thinking. Here it’s nearly April, and Mother’s day is coming up, and where, exactly, does one go to buy radioactive isotopes? Maybe a glow-in-the-dark Tritium keychain for the kids? Or bit of certified genuine Trinitite–that would be glass that was created from the desert sand by the historic Trinity nuclear test explosion in 1945.The answer is United Nuclear, a website that sells the nuclear tidbits listed above, as well as a variety of other scientific curiosities like aerogel, magnetic ferro-fluid, levitation kits and samples of the kinds of chemicals that they don’t put into chemistry sets anymore. Technology week in view: 31st March 2008

| Posted Mar 31st, 2008 by jasons [e-mail, website]

It is April tomorrow and I’m still wondering where February went? Time is a precious commodity these days and keeping up to date with various interesting web sites can be a challenge in itself and I often recommend that people should look for a feed or subscribe facility on a web site and use a feed reader program such as Google Reader. If you are unsure what a feed is this explanation may help: What you need to know about feeds. This way you can get the information you are interested in, delivered to you, as and when it is written and you don’t have to keep visiting many web sites.

Touch-free Paper Towel Dispenser

| Posted Mar 29th, 2008 by Chief Gadgeteer [e-mail, website]

In the tradition of other touch-free/touchless gadgets, here is a touch-free paper towel dispenser. Works pretty simply – just wave your hand in front of the sensor and it starts pushing out half sheets, and automatically stops when it detects the perforated lines. It stops and locks the rest in place, so you can with just one hand rip off what you need without touching the rest of the roll.

Get and use this in your home to keep from spreading germs around. Just needs 4 D batteries. Get rechargeables!

Price: $53.99

Inkjet Printers suck … down?

| Posted Mar 28th, 2008 by Chief Gadgeteer [e-mail, website]

I admit the title of this post is a bit cryptic, but bear with me. If you own an inkjet printer, the short video referenced here is worth a look. In case you’re wondering why your printer may be running out of ink quicker than you think it should or maybe just plain not working, take a look as the author rips apart his own printer; this may be why. While I’m not sure that this really applies to all inkjets, I’ll bet it’s true of many.

Adobe launches free Web version of Photoshop

| Posted Mar 27th, 2008 by Chief Gadgeteer [e-mail, website]

In a move similar to Google, Microsoft and a slew of other Web 2.0 companies, Adobe now offers a Web-based version of Photoshop, called Photoshop Express, for free. It is a basic version, and obviously does not have all of the features of the full version or even the cheaper Photoshop Elements, but will probably satisfy a decent chunk of the Photoshop target market.

So for all of you warez fans out there, quit downloading illegal copies of Photoshop and using faked keys!

Check out Photoshop Express.

GPS sales to tank?

| Posted Mar 26th, 2008 by Chief Gadgeteer [e-mail, website]

“Tank” may be a strong word, but Om Malik points out that SiRF Technology, which is a maker of GPS chips, is letting go some of its workforce and he feels that SiRF is a bellwether of the GPS industry. As he puts it, SiRF is the “canary in the GPS coal mine” and the GPS end-device makers may follow. For years now, GPS has been the single best-selling electronics category.

I agree with Malik who makes the point that GPS-only devices will go by the wayside as GPS functionality is integrated into other devices, particularly cell phones. I hope that Dash is looking to the future as they have an interesting and potentially very useful product.
