First to the punch to disassemble the iPhone is the team at AnandTech. Lots of pictures, including the processors, and some speculation as to specifics. Get to it quickly before the Apple legal team does!
The only thing that will #$%! up the iPhone is AT&T.
My brother called with an update this morning on his new gadget… the iBrick. Even though he was number 6 in line and a current customer of AT&T, AT&T has not been able to activate the iPhone more than 12 hours later. According to my brother, there is a world that rotates on the screen during activation stopping you from even syncing your tunes or doing anything at all with the iPhone until the activation process has ended. He does like the the form factor and feel of the iPhone.
Apparently there are rumors that the EDGE network got a bit of an upgrade on Wednesday or Thursday resulting in a faster connection. Even Jobs called the AT&T’s EDGE network slow:
You know every (AT&T) Blackberry gets its mail over EDGE. It turns out EDGE is great for mail, and it works well for maps and a whole bunch of other stuff. Where you wish you had faster speed is…on a Web browser. It’s good enough, but you wish it was a little faster.
Now I bet Jobs just wishes AT&T could simply activate the iPhones. I wish I could be on the crisis management call to hear Jobs chew out Stephenson about the horrible roll-out.
By the way, it looks like iPhones are still in stock at AT&T and Apple stores.
Since I’d rather not see my computers, hundreds of CDs, books, & DVDs go up in smoke, I’ve got to get one of these lint removal vent cleaning systems for my dyer. Strangely enough, I don’t worry about the oven or the toaster blowing up or setting anything on fire, but the dryer… now there’s something I check manually periodically. For only $30, this device hooks up to your shop vac or drill to easily and quickly clean up to 12 feet of your dryer’s vent hose.
This product comes with 4 36-inch flexible rods that screw together to increas the length as well as a 4-inch auger brush. There is also a blockage removal tool that cam remove things like animal nests! Oh yes, this can also be used to clean the lint trap in the dryer itself. As if that wasn’t enough, it also comes with an instructional DVD.
My brother has been waiting in anticipation for the iPhone since it was announced like a little kid counts down to Christmas. Today was his Christmas as he waited in line for iPhone.
I called my brother thinking I may be the first person to call him on his new shiny gadget, but he was still in line. While some lines are sometimes adversarial, only peace and free love are offered in a line for Apple products as people in line worked on their Macbooks, talked with reporters and I bet some hacky-sack was played. When I called him, he was in the middle of a networked golf game on his PSP against others in line.
Apparently, iPhones aren’t sold until 6p so the Apple store closed their doors at 2p to ready the store. Immediately after closing, a veil was lifted in all the windows in the Apple store in a David Copperfield manner. Check out his photo blog for the rest of the story. As of this writing, it’s been 40 minutes since the doors were reopened at his store to sell the iPhone… let’s see how long it takes to receive the excited news of my brother’s new gadget baby.
Our friends over at Neuros Technologies have announced a beta version of a YouTube browser for their award-winning Neuros OSD product. With this release, the device can now be used to easily browse and play the entire YouTube video collection on any TV, both standard and high definition. Functionality already in this release includes keyword searching and browsing by category and rating. Future releases will bring user interface improvements and added functionality such as sharing, subscriptions, and much more.
The real story is that this advancement has been made possible by Neuros’ worldwide community of open source developers. Neuros’ embraces the open source community and closely works with developers to quickly incorporate these open source contributions in official releases.
It sounds like Neuros Technology has a lot more up their sleeves for future releases:
Though this release is perhaps its most exciting to date, “it’s just the beginningâ€, said Born. “We’ve got a number of user interface enhancements and fixes already under way that are making the OSD an increasing pleasure to use, and we also look forward to bringing an array of exciting connectivity tools to the Neuros OSD in the coming weeks and months.â€
It’s a Guy Thing examines 70 patents over the past 140 years that were obviously invented by men in the looses term. Some of the brainstorming wonders include:
Albert’s Helmet-Mounted Pistol – for the guy who wants to defend himself, yet must carry a beer AND a bratwurst at all times.
John’s Head Butt Game – for the thoughtful parent who wants to keep little Timmy and Suzie busy by having them head butt each other into unconsciousness.
Harry’s Homocopter – for the guy who refuses to let the laws of physics dictate his mode of air transportation.
Scott Seegert researched through actual paperwork that was filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office to bring us actual illustrations and inventor quotes of the various gadgets and contraptions. So sit back, crack open a cold one and follow along with IT’S A GUY THING as it doggedly attempts to answer that age-old question: what the….?
One of our readers wrote in to tell us about a cool new piece of software that looks like a video game, but instead it gives you a real-time 3D dynamic representation of your network traffic. It’s called Eve, and while it’s now in an ‘intro’ phase, there are some interesting possibilities for it in the future, including being able to disconnect network connections. So perfect for the network admin/systems admin. Definitely take a look at the short videos on the Eve site for an immediate understanding of what Eve does.
This is reminiscent of a hack that some folks put together back in at least ‘95/’96 to allow you to use Doom to kill UNIX processes. I loved that thing – made my sys admin job so much more enjoyable!
Earlier this week “the Geeks” launched our latest value-add website for Geeks around the web called Grrls For Geeks! The site compiles pictures and photos of cute Geek Grrls (Girls for non-Geeks) for your viewing and rating pleasure in a modern and geek pinup daily calendar sort of way.
Start each day by checking out the Grrl of the Day followed by the Gizmo of the Day!
I remember seeing a couple of these new ‘for Dummies’ products at CES, which are more than just the books that have become practically a household phrase; they are books plus an actual product. For example, the one I remember was Digital Photography for Dummies that came with an actual digital camera. This particular product is very cool for Do-it-Yourself geeks – it’s a Cable and Satellite Wiring Kit that comes with cable, wire stripper/cutter, crimping tool and connectors.
iPhones have been put into the hands of the media, journalists and tech folks. Not us sadly, but there is already lots of good material out there days before Friday’s general release to the public. First off, we’ll show you an entertaining video from David Pogue of the New York Times.
There’s another video from Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal after the jump, but here are some written reviews that you may be interested in: by David Pogue, Walt Mossberg, and Steven Levy. All in all, the reviewers are reasonably upbeat and positive in their assessment of the iPhone, but I think a better nutshell view was put together by Engadget. It sure seems to be ‘missing’ a lot of features, and this exclusive tie-in to AT&T is bewildering at best. I mean, we understand AT&T’s desire for this, but think of how many customers are going to hate Apple for this.
My take: in 2 years, this will probably be a great product and there will be some nice competition around by then too!
