eMotion 3-in-1 Desktop Media Player

These digital picture frames are evolving! Not only will eMotions Picture Frame show photos from SD, MS and MMC memory cards or loads directly via USB from the camera or computer, but the eMotion 3-in-1 Desktop Media Player will play DVDs, VCDs, music CDs and MP3! If you aren’t watching anything, the screen becomes a mirror.

With a 7″ LCD screen and a 16:9 aspect ration you could bring this gizmo on the road to look at pictures as well as use it as a DVD player.

In a few years, digital picture frames will be what everyone buys when they go to Walgreens, Eckerds or a Wolf Camera instead of the old fashioned picture frames.

The Intel iMac – Still Want One?

| Posted Jan 31st, 2006 by Chief Gadgeteer [e-mail, website]

In case you’ve been hiding under a rock for the past month or so, you most certainly know about the launch of Apple’s new Macs with Intel Core Duo processors in them. So far, the iMac desktop is available with both 17″ and 20″ LCD screens. The MacBook Pro notebook is due out this month. If you’ve been considering getting one of these new iMacs or perhaps the MacBook Pro, you may want to reconsider or at least wait for a few months. Why? Well, Apple essentially had to re-write applications to perform natively on the Intel iMac. Those that have not been re-written as of yet need to go through a software translator called Rosetta. This slows things down, especially for resource intensive applications (ex: Photoshop). And 3rd-party software vendors are still playing catch up to get their apps optimized for the new iMacs. There is a minor bit of controversy in Apple claiming that the new Intel iMacs are 2-3 times faster than an iMac G5, and while it’s not a complete lie, MacWorld made sure to get into raw performance numbers and show how things really pan out.

adidas Announces New Modular Soccer Boot

| Posted Jan 30th, 2006 by Chief Gadgeteer [e-mail, website]

Being a (recreational) soccer player, this news item naturally caught my eye: adidas recently announced a new concept in soccer boots: a modular boot. The new +F50 TUNIT, as the model is called, consists of 3 interchangeable components: the upper, the chassis and the studs. Of course, each part comes in different styles and functions to suit different weather and pitch conditions. Now you can decide how your boot will look and work. Already, adidas has lined up quite a number of star players to wear the new shoes at the 2006 World Cup in Germany this summer. I’d love to get my feet into a pair of these, but I can already imagine the price tag attached to these puppies.

Plush Mouse Flash Drive, 128mb

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and you are in a pickle because you’re not sure what to get your sweetheart. Gizmos and Electronics are not just for guys anymore, but you also probably want to get something soft and huggable (unless your sweetheart is a guy, then something electronic and black will work).

While running through Cyberguys, a favorite shopping site of mine, I ran across this plush mouse which is soft and huggable AND can be plugged into a computer! Granted the USB drive only can hold 128MB, that’s big enough to bring work or homework around.

24Mbps Broadband Rollout in the UK

| Posted Jan 26th, 2006 by Chief Gadgeteer [e-mail, website]

As much technology as we have access to in the States, sometimes we fall way behind our counterparts in Europe and Japan. Take for example, the rollout of 24Mbps broadband in the UK by BE Un limited for only £24/month which is roughly US $42 at today’s exchange rates. You can get a package that limits you to 1GB of downloads for £14/month. This broadband technology is based on ADSL2+ which runs over the same copper wires to your home that you use for your existing DSL and/or phone line. Currently, I pay approximately US $50 for a 768kbps DSL line. Obviously I’d pay $42 for 24Mbps!
